Subdivisions in the Quran

There are different divisions in the Quran. Some of these divisions were done by the prophet peace be upon him, while other divisions were done gradually in order to make the recitation and understanding of the Quran easier:

The Quran is divided into 114 surahs (chapters)

Then the surahs are further divided into verses (Ayas). The verses 6236 without addition of bismillahirrahmanirrahim at the begining of the chapter. They are 6348 when all bismillahirrahmanirrahim are added.

Then there is another division in which the Quran is divided into 30 equal parts known as Juz.

Furthermore every Juz is divided into 2Hizb (groups) which means the Quran has 60hizbs in total.

There is also another division known as rubu'u. There are 4 rubu'u in one hizb. This means that the number of rubu'u is 8 in a Juz and 240 in the Quran.

The writing of the Quran

After every revelation of the Qur'an the prophet peace be upon him used to read the verses to The companions as they memorized.

Some of the companions used to write the Quran using ink pots and feathers. They were writing on pieces of skin, wooden boards, clay boards, branches of palm and bones of animals.

Surat Al A'lah (Q87: 6) We shall make sure you recite (the Quran) so that you will not forget.

The number of companions who wrote the Quran increased when the prophet migrated to Madina and increased further after the treaty of hudaybiyyah.
