Question: Explain wood carving in Ghana.
Answer:
The European writers who visited the coast of Ghana in 15th centuary onwards, noted that, Ghanaians made use of wood in their artistic work by producingwooden stools,drums,staffs etc.
These stools,staffs and drums were decorated with artistic symbols which were of religious,, philosophical and cultural significance. For example, a stool may have a hen surrounded by young chickens conveys the message that heads of families have it as moral duty to protect and care for members of the families. At the roof top of the palace of Assin Manso is a wooden sculpture of an elephant which has step into a trap. The message conveyed is that, when an elephant steps into a trap, the trap cease to function which means that the occupants of the palace is the final authority in Assin Manso.
