About this Talent:
My favorite sweater is beige—not striking, not trendy, just the kind that would go unnoticed as you pass by a store. I’ve worn it a hundred times, and not one time did I ever receive a compliment. Yet as I stand in front of a mirror, wrapped in my beige sweater, I find myself wondering: Is there really anything wrong with being ordinary?
I remember the day this question truly hit me. I sat amongst hundreds of students in the sweltering heat, with my parents constantly smiling at me from the bleachers. My hands clap as I watch each student get called onto the shaky platform upfront, with their names followed by a long list of achievements and their necks clanging with medals. As soon as I was called up next, I walked up the platform with both my parents by my side. They hung one bronze medal on my neck.
My head spun in disappointment. My hands shook more nervously than the platform. Why don’t I feel happy? I had earned a medal, shouldn’t I be proud? Instead, a sinking feeling gnawed at me. Am I shallow for wanting more? As I stepped down and returned to my seat, I couldn’t shake the thought that perhaps I felt empty from measuring my worth by standards that weren’t truly mine.
Being an overachiever has always been my dream. I imagined the applause and cheers over my head. I wanted to see myself bagging up trophies, and making speeches on podiums. I starved to be more. But instead, I sat quietly at the corners of classrooms thinking every opportunity would come looking for me. I hesitated loudly when volunteering for leadership roles, raising my hand in class discussions, or pushing myself beyond what felt safe. In my mind, the recognition I craved would somehow arrive on its own, without me having to step over the fence.
At that moment, as I sat quietly on a stiff chair with my bronze medal, it hit me. I was the one looking down on my beige sweater. I had allowed my self-worth to be dictated by society’s definition of success. I let my definition of happiness become based on the eyes of other people, and yet, nobody was even undermining me. Will I really sit here and continue to despise myself for not being perfect? I started to question if this is what I wanted for myself, or what I wanted society to see me as.
As I reflect on my seventeen years of life, I recognize that my achievements, even if not headline-grabbing, mean something to me. I am not just a student at a science high school and an honor student— I take pride in being both. My experiences in the STEM field have led me to discover a genuine passion for research, something that might not stand out to everyone but is deeply fulfilling to me.
Looking back, my realization wasn’t earth-shattering; it was simple. I laughed at how I had been so hard on myself. Embracing my ‘beige-ness’ allowed me to shift my focus from chasing perfection to appreciating the true value of being me.
On second thought, maybe I love my beige sweater. In a world that glorifies the extraordinary, I’ve learned that there’s nothing wrong with choosing to be myself: comfortable, reliable, and a perfect fit.
Sometimes, it really takes embracing the quiet corners to learn that a true accomplishment isn’t about being seen, it’s about seeing yourself more clearly.
